For more information on migraine or #YaleMedicine, visit: 🤍 Everyone gets headaches from time to time, but migraines are different. For an estimated 15% to 18% of women and 6% of men with migraine, they endure not just intense pain in their head but also nausea; an inability to tolerate light, noise, or odors; confusion; overwhelming fatigue, and more—to the point that they are unable to keep working or be present with family and friends. This inability to function separates migraines from headaches. The good news is that knowledge about them and treatments for them have increased exponentially to the point that most migraine sufferers are able to enjoy meaningful relief that allows them to go about their lives in a fairly normal way. Doctors may prescribe medications, behavioral treatments and lifestyle changes, and even electrical stimulation devices. Learning to distinguish warning signs of an impending migraine from what have traditionally been called “triggers” can greatly improve someone’s ability to manage these episodes. “The understanding of migraine biology and the treatments available have exploded in the last decade; with proper education, consistent use of the tools available can improve the lives of most migraine patients,” says Christopher Gottschalk, MD, a Yale Medicine neurologist and director of Yale Medicine's Headache and Facial Pain Center. “Unfortunately, migraine remains underdiagnosed, undertreated, and underestimated—according to reports, migraine causes more disability than all other neurological conditions combined. But learning to identify the early signs of a migraine attack and intervene quickly and effectively can provide patients with a level of control they never thought was possible,” he says.

About one in seven people live with what's ranked the second-most debilitating disease on the planet, right after back pain: migraine. Though the causes are unclear, migraine is a serious neurological disease that often runs in families. But the malady is not often taken seriously, in part because the headaches, sensitivity to light and sound, nausea, dizziness, and a host of other symptoms affect three times as many women as men. Correspondent Susan Spencer talks with migraine expert Dr. William Young; Linda Porter, of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, about migraine research; Katherine Foxhall, author of "Migraine: A History"; and Cincinnati artist Priya Rama, whose migraine visions have become key to her art. What Really Causes a Migraine?

Migraines are more than just headaches. They’re pre-headaches, post-headaches, sensitivities, nausea, fatigue, and can even bring on food cravings. But most of all they are painful and frustrating for those who suffer from them. For years they were misunderstood, but now we know it comes down to two main things, your genes and your brain. Migraines are a result of brain dysfunction. It is a problem that originates in the brain itself and is an abnormality with pain processing. There are four stages to the migraine, and only one is the headache itself. A person starts out experiencing prodrome, this stage can last an entire day and can include yawning, trouble concentrating, increased urination, and cravings for things like chocolate. Then comes the aura, which means the migraine sufferer will see light spots, jagged lines, things like that in their vision or people might have a sensory aura like a pins and needles tingling sensation up one limb. This can last 5 to 60 minutes and is followed almost immediately by a headache. People then can experience a headache hangover of sorts, or a postdrome, which is somewhat of a recovery phase. Genes play a role in migraines. There are migraine causing genes and you can be genetically predisposed to having painful migraine headaches. Research has found that a reduction in a protein called CGRP, or calcitonin gene-related peptide, has been shown to correlate with migraine improvement and this research has led to more effective treatment for those who experience migraines. SICK is a new series that looks at how diseases actually work inside our body. We'll be visiting medical centers and talking to top researchers and doctors to uncover the mysteries of viruses, bacteria, fungi and our own immune system. Come back every Tuesday for a new episode and let us know in the comments which diseases you think we should cover next.

Spring season highlights your Liver energy. If your Liver and Gallbladder energy channels are blocked or not flowing well, it can cause a tendency toward migraines and other symptoms (see the Reel on our grid 2 posts back, “Signs Your Liver Energy is Out of Balance”). Headaches can be caused by disruption in various organ energy channels, but migraines in particular tend to be due to blocked Liver and Gallbladder energy channels. A classic sign of Liver/Gallbladder type migraine is when it is one-sided, or affects the sides of the head. This set of points is very commonly used in acupuncture practice to relieve migraine headaches. If you don’t have access to an acupuncturist, you can try doing Gua Sha on these points at home. I recommend stroking each point for 1-3 minutes. The stronger the headache, the more time you should spend at each point. As always if you have chronic and severe migraine condition please consider finding an acupuncturist for more personalized help. Acupressure and Gua Sha at home can be an effective and useful starting point for relief, but you may also require additional support. Migraines induce severe pain and are more than just headaches. There are three common stages people experience during a migraine: prodrome, aura, and attack. Sharp pain is caused by the dilation of blood vessels surrounding the brain, which can also produce a throbbing sensation. Migraine triggers vary from person to person, but may include hormonal fluctuations, medications, foods, physical factors, sleep changes, or light. Check out our latest work at 🤍.

Stroke is the fifth-leading cause of death in the U.S. and a leading cause of disability, according to the American Stroke Association. To recognize symptoms, leading stroke experts recommend memorizing an easy-to-remember acronym: FAST! Face (drooping of the face) Arm (arm weakness) Speech (slurred speech) Time (time counts call 911 immediately) Cedars-Sinai has been designated a Comprehensive Stroke Center by The Joint Commission, an independent, not-for-profit organization that accredits and certifies nearly 21,000 health care organizations and programs in the United States. This advanced certification for comprehensive stroke centers recognizes the significant resources in staff and training that these centers must have to treat complex stroke cases. Cedars-Sinai was proud to be among the first five hospitals in the nation, and the first in Southern California, to receive this designation.
